Recognizing Early Pregnancy Symptoms

Published Feb 2, 2008

Recognizing the early signs of pregnancy is not always easy. While some women are aware of conception almost the next day, others take much longer to work it out. Being in tune with your body and being able to listen to what it is trying to say is an important factor in being able to recognize early pregnancy symptoms.

For those with communication difficulties with their body here are a few tell tale signs to look for.

Absence of a period
The most obvious but not always reliable. We have all heard horror stories about pregnant women still having the odd period here and there. Also there are factors other than pregnancy which can lead to your monthly visitor not arriving, stress is often responsible for this, though it can be sign of other medical problems. If after a week or two of your period missing in action, a pregnancy test or a trip to the doctor may be a worth while investment.

Increased sense of smell, taste and possible even hearing
No you have not become a super hero! For some reason upon conception the body's senses become heightened. Taste and smells that were once familiar and liked have now become overpowering and awful. The effect varies greatly between women, with some noticing no different and other driven crazy by their noses new power

Headaches and general unwell feeling
While the creation of life is supposed to be a joyous event many pregnant women will tell it is not all fun and games. As the hormones begin to run rampant through your body, you may be left feeling a little less then well.

Fatigue and dizziness
Tired all of a sudden no matter how much sleep you have had? Getting out of bed just feels too hard? Stand up as you would any other time but now you feel dizzy? Off to the shop/doctor for a pregnancy test you go

Mood swings
It's just like you have PMS but without the period. Your mood is all over the place. This is due to the body's hormones being in a flurry of activity as they prepare for growing a baby.

A strange feeling inside
Most pregnant women feel this but often don't know why and it is difficult for them to explain. Something just doesn't feel quite the same anymore.

Backache, darkened areolas, vaginal discharged, swollen and colored vagina
Not necessarily all at once but these are also signs of pregnancy

If you suspect that you may be pregnant a confirmation test is advised as soon as possible. There are many home kits available these days with some that are able to be used as early as a week after conception.
