Natural Pain Relief Through Childbirth

Published May 18, 2008

Birth of a baby

The concept of pain during childbirth varies between women. There are those who are fortunate enough to have relatively easy births, where little pain is experienced. Then there are the labours that seem to go on for days with the expectant mother in agony every inch of the way.

Over the years medical advancements have provided some relief to the birthing mother. The introduction of the epidural, pethadine and even gas have all offered many women assistance in times of need. However these medical interventions can have their drawbacks and are not suited to everyone. Thankfully there are some more natural alternatives available

  • Hypnobirthing
Relaxation and breathing techniques are practiced throughout pregnancy. When the mother enters labor she is able to use these techniques to enter a meditation state which can omit the body from feeling pain. The woman is still able to feel the birthing sensations and play a very active role in the birth. Some say that because the woman is more in tune with her body she has greater control and the birth is easier.
  • Hydrotherapy
Many birthing suites now have a birthing pool/bath or shower present. The sensation of water is believed to greatly relax the birthing mother and remove some of the pain she may be experiencing. This is particularly effective in the early stages of labor though many women are now electing to have the entire birth in the water due pain reduction that is experienced. Some also believe that birthing in water is less traumatic for the baby as the water simulates the womb.
  • Aromatherapy
A qualified aromatherapist can provide the birthing mother with a range of oil concoctions that can assist in removing the awareness of pain. These oils can be inhaled through concentrated breathing, burnt in the room or massaged into the skin.
  • Massage
The birthing woman's partner can reduce pain through various forms of massage. Generally massaging the lower back as the woman is leaning over a chair or birthing ball is of the most assistance though the woman can give directions as necessary.
  • Positioning
The days of laying flat on your back with your legs in stirupps are over. Moving around and changing positions is a great way to become less aware of pain during birth. There are also a range of tools that can be used. The modern woman can now choose from birthing balls and stools to bean bags and chairs. Getting up walking around is a great way to take your mind off the pain.

Remember what ever method you choose will be right for you.  Do some research, be prepared and have a back up.  As any experienced parent will tell you children are always unpredictable and it starts from the moment birth does!
