In a technology based world where machines are replacing physical activity, the human race is beginning to develop a lifestyle similar to that of a sloth.
The child of yesterday would run and play in the streets and parks. The child of today however sits in front of an electronic screen playing the latest video game. Is it any wonder that society's waistband is growing bigger?
The importance of a healthy active lifestyle is continually being harped about by almost every media source available. Parents are constantly told that it is necessary to ensure that their children lead active lifestyles. However, rarely are parents told how to go about such a feat.
Changing lifestyle habits is never easy. This is especially true when referring to children. The main reason for this is, that it is not just the child's habits that need altering. If you want to have an active child then you must lead by example and become an active parent.
The best way to begin making changes is to start small and then build up on these foundations. The results will not only be amazing but also long lasting.
Here are some useful tips to get you started
1. Do an hour of activity every day
Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Whether you go to the park and kick a ball, ride a bike or go for a swim, it doesn't matter, get out there and start moving. Children enjoy spending time with their parents in fun relaxed environments. Get some rollerblades and learn together. Join a little league team or whatever other sport takes your child's interest.
2. Choose water as a drink
Water is the best thirst-quencher you can give kids, especially ones that are active. Water rehydrates and replenishes quicker than any other liquid and has been found to assist in weight lost. In contrast, unhealthy sugary liquids such as cordial and soft drinks actually make children thirstier.
3. Eat more fruit and vegetables
Research shows that most people, both adults and children aren’t eating enough fruit and vegetables. Leading an active healthy life takes energy. A balanced diet with sufficient fruit and veg gives growing bodies all the nutrients they need.
4. Turn off the TV or computer
Just because your child went and ran around for an hour or so, doesn't mean they should spend the next two in front of a screen! There’s no need to be a spoilsport about it, but setting limits brings real benefits. While some recommendations are that children chould not exceed two hours of small screen activity this does not mean they have to have two hours a day. Colour in, read a book, play a board game, do anything rather than watch TV or play the computer!
REMEMBER when you give your child excessive junk you are depriving them of a full and healthy life.

Hi there, I so agree with you when you write about the child of yesterday running in the streets and parks. I t really saddens me that children today miss out on so many valuable opportunities to expand their sense of responsibility, self esteem and respect for life by not having the outdoor experiences they need - alone!! This thought was the impetus for my website. Too sad.
